Safe and sound

Thank you for all your prayers for the logistics and travel.

Daniel managed to get out of Australia and back into the US with his slightly mangled passport (its been through the laundry a couple times), after only minor delays. Not one of our bags missed the layover or got lost in transit. None of us got stopped for inspection by customs (even though some of us declared that we were bringing food in the country!).

Michelle was there and waiting to pick us up by the time we got through customs. We hadn't heard back (via email) whether she knew she was picking us up, and had been sending emails to her (and our) friend Mary to get ahold of Michelle and let here know. As luck would have it, Friday is her day off. She wouldn't have been able to come if we'd arrived a day earlier or a day later. And borrowing the van got worked out at the 11th hour, 9:00 the night before! But it all worked out on God's timing, and he's prepared even when we "should have" been more prepared ourselves.

And cool bonus blessing when we stopped to use the restroom and to get some drive-through breakfast (on the way home) we couldn't have picked a better spot--at that exact exit was the only known grocery store in two counties with a persian deli, giving Michelle the treat of having time to pick up some Persian take-out to take home with her while everyone else got their breakfast burritos and whatnot!

It was with sadness we said goodbye to each other--to Lia and Diana at LAX and then everyone else back at school a couple hours later...but a happy reunion to see the team members at school and our friends and family.

The weirdest thing about being back is driving on the right side of the road again!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://teamaustralia.blogspot.com/2006/12/we-are-home-safe-and-sound.html' title='We are home! Normally we send 2-3 people each day to the school but Wednesday we sent five since it was the last day and a chance to say one last goodbye. Some of the team hung out in the courtyard rather than in class, and were approached by a lot of students who wanted to say goodbye or ask one last question since word was out it was our last day. The one on one environment was fruitful in ministering to individual kids who were shy about asking questions or finding answers to tough issues in the group environment of the classroom.

We also took the classes outside to play a game Steve Gonzoles taught us where multiple balls are thrown around a circle, and a lesson about teamwork and shifting your paradigm is introduced. The kids loved it.

Student Response

We wanted to share a really touching email we got from one of the students at Model Farms about the impact we had at his school :)

Heya Chris, Daniel, Tanya and the rest of the Team Australia Mission Group,

it's Andy from Model Farms High School,

"laughs"... the time we've spent together at school has been greatand i have just spent the afternoon reading your posts on your blog.

this is just a quick email to say how thankful i am that you have come to Australia and especially to the Farms. every time i've heard you talk i feel God working through you and am still amazing to see the wonderful changes you have brought on throughout the school.

thank you so much for the awesome material and resources you have given me and thanks for being a really encouraging group and i hope that soon i will be able to go to HSE for a semester or two or just a visit "grins"

from you blog it seems you have had a wonderful time in australia and i encourage you to come back at the soonest possible chance... i know many people in the school who would just love to have you back!!! God has blessed our whole team with getting together each morning at 7 am to pray as a team with Pastor Des Daniels prior to our teaching and service projects beginning each day. God’s provision in our lives is so evident. Jesus has continued to mode and heal our hearts from each of our pasts. God continues to teach me and the team what it means to truly sacrifice our lives to follow Jesus Christ.

In this past week, our HSE team has blessed with teaching and speaking to over 850 teenagers between the grades 7 to 11th grade. We teach about Jesus Christ’s love, the impact the gospel, and the good news it brings in our lives and how it can impact their lives to each and everyday. We have also been teaching from the books of Daniel and Ephesians. God is moving mightily through these public high schools. The youth are seeking for a greater meaning in life and we are getting the opportunity to share its Jesus and a personal relationship that they are missing in their lives.

Multiple kids accepted the Lord into their lives this past week. John and Diana both had opportunities and the blessing to help youth with the most exciting decision they can make in their own lives. Also, a woman named Helen who we have been praying for accepted Christ into her life on Sunday. Helen’s story of conversion is a special one.

Our team was able to also do various service projects for several of the Calvary Chapel members. One project that we worked on this week was to assist with painting the inside of a house to help with the selling process. God was really touching the families heart that we were blessed to help. God has a way of softening people’s heart’s when they let down their own pride and ask for help. Part of Horizon, School of Evangelism that has some of the largest impact is when our team and others help people in need and share the love of Christ. Our team has really started to notice a strong change and love within the Calvary Chapel Church.

For this past weekend, out team took the youth group bowling on Friday night. This was good fun with the kids and a blessing to hang out with them away from the church. You should have seen Tanya with her natural bowling style, I think on her second game she scored a 132. Pretty good!

Saturday was a special day for everyone in the church. We were able to go to a local Nursing Home and sing Christmas Carol’s and share the love and news of Jesus Christ with many people who don’t get family coming into visit. We had over 30 people come and be apart of this blessing and it was truly one of the more special times for me personally while on this missions trip. We sang many songs and them spoke and prayed with probably 60 beautiful people. Our prayers for this relationship to grow into a full time ministry opportunity that people from Calvary Chapel can continue and watch the Lord move through the nursing home.

Later that day, Daniel and I (Chris) went and played a serious game of cricket with the men from the church. We had 14 very athletic men that we really into this sport. It was heaps (a lot) of fun and we learned the game that is equivalent to baseball in America. Daniel was a natural batsman and I wasn’t bad at pitching or as the Aussie call it (bowling). Don’t ask us why they call it that? Just think of David Wells when I’m pitching (bowling). The rest of the team went out to dinner with some of the church for a gift exchange. This was a good opportunity to fellowship and build stronger relationships with members of Calvary.

On Sunday, Pastor Des gave a wonderful sermon on Mark 5. It really spoke to many people in church. After the service, the whole team were invited back to Pastor Des’s home for a real, authentic Barbie. Throw some shrimp on the Barbie, Mate! We ate and ate and it was a special time to reflect on what God has been doing for us all and in the church since our arrival of 30 days ago.

Thank you all for your continued prayers for us, the church, and for the youth of Australia. We know your all praying for us and we thank you for team.

Please pray for the following:

God will bless our last week here in the schools and withsouls being saved

The Church will continue to seek after God and all his provision with unity

Our team will continue to be lead by the Holy Spirit in everything we do

Safety and smoothness with our travel back to the US on Dec. 15th

Last Night of Youth Group

Every class is different, even when we cover the same material. In most of the classes at Model Farms we've been continuing to share from the story of the Firey Furnace from Daniel, as it has been well received and given us good launching pad to discuss some important topics with them such as that miracles like that still happen today (we gave examples from our lives and the lives of people we know), doing the right thing even in the face of opposition in the form of peer pressure, and why perhaps God might sometimes rescue, but in other cases allow someone to die. Its not an issue of whether God is capable, and that's a huge message to these kids.

One thing that has worked well was something Daniel started to do in a couple of the classes, if the kids were disruptive, he'd pick out the most disruptive kid to "be" King Nebuchadnezzar in the story. "King Nebuchadnezzar, you're supposed to be mad right now" and have them get actively involved in the story. The kids loved that. Though in a number of the classes, the kids were just so amazingly attentive we didn't have to reign in their focus.

They have definitely been listening to our message, and asking lots of highly relevant questions. In several of the classes in the past couple days we've been asked whether drinking or smoking marijuana are sins. These are the kind of issues many of the kids are facing around them. It was a great opportunity to share with them about temptation and being enslaved to snares of the flesh, versus the freedom in Christ. The idea that the kind of fun God wants them to have doesn't have negative concequences like hangovers was one we presented to them.

Other kids wanted to know why having pre-marital sex is wrong--and its quite a change of paradigm for the kids to answer that one from a perspective that isn't "because God doesn't want you to have any fun" but from the perspective of God wanting good things for them, wanting to spare them pain and suffering, wanting them to enjoy sex the way he designed it (in marriage), rather than letting ourselves lie to ourselves that we "know better" than God how his design should work. Physical union is designed to bring people together as "one flesh"--tearing that apart is very painful and has a lot more concequences relationally than a lot of 13 year olds realize.

After one of the classes today one of the boys in the class approached me to say he'd made a mistake and stolen something last week (he had gotten caught), and he felt really broken up over it, he knew it was a bad thing to do, and felt so bad about the poor choice he'd made. It was such a blessing to be able to share with him what the bible says about repentance and God's forgiveness.

In one of the other classes today another boy asked to receive Christ and didn't seem to mind if some of his classmates might have been watching when Diana and John prayed for him in the front of the room. Every kid we've encountered is really special and God has a unique heart for them, and we could see a lot of unique struggles and successes.

As we say goodbye to the classes when we find its the last time we'll be seeing them, the kids were sad to see us leaving and were hoping we might come back next year.

Service Projects

Every week we've had a number of "practical ministry" service projects worked into our schedule. Tanya and Lia cleaned Pauline's kitchen Wednesday. Thursday the entire team is at Paul's house re-painting a few of the walls. Other service projects have ranged from baby-sitting to yard-work for many of the different members of the church at Calvary Chapel Sydney.

A lot of those people didn't want to ask for help. Culturally, Australians don't like to ask for help. They'll tell you "no, no, that's alright" if you ask them if you offer assistance. It took a bit of persistence on our part for the doors to be open for serving in practical ways. It requires a bit of humility sometimes to admit when we really can't do everything on our own and we do need the body of Christ around us.

But the thing we've noticed, both here and on our mission trip last semester to Poland, is that the service projects consistently have ons of the most profound impacts on the church as a whole. So many churches its just the case its just not something people think about, when people haven't experienced love expressed in that way its so easy to be hesitant about the idea of helping someone else in like manner. But after seeing the positive impact its had on the church, Des, the senior pastor, now wants to incorporate a service component into the upcoming addition of home-groups at the church.

The benefits are multi-faceted. Not only are individuals blessed with accomplishing something they might not have the time, energy, or capability of doing on their own, but the time spent helping creates opportunities for fellowship and getting to know others in the church. We even heard one story about how Pauline used the girls coming over to clean her kitchen as an evangelism opportunity at work.

Tanya shared a devotion with us at the Wednesday night church prayer meeting about receiving the blessings of God. I asked if she would recap a little of what was on her heart that night for those of you reading the blog who weren't able to make the prayer meeting:

From what God has shown me (Tanya) here in Australia, there is a real need for the love of God to be practically lived out, and God had been stir this in my heart for a while. I would see a lot of needs and see that these needs could be filled by the team while we are here. My hope and desire is that as the team is living the love of God, it can be a great witness for the church and that they too would be encouraged to serve one another. Just as the scripture says in Galatians 5:13-14 and Galatians 6:10:

For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." -Galatians 5:13-14

So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. -Galatians 6:10

These two verses are great book ends in the book of Galatians, and within those verses are some really soul searching verses and Paul just beautifully wraps things up. I have been really touched and moved by what God is doing for the Molteno family and others, to let them be helped and assisted as this is the definition of what it is to "through love serve one another." And through it all, the greatest blessing was to be able to get to know and build relationships with these families.

Thank you to the families for allowing us into your house and into your hearts.

Painting Service Project

The past three days we've been sending teams over to Paul's house after our schools outreaches to paint two of the rooms in his house.

To give you an update, here are a couple praise reports from this morning.

The first period today is a class we've had at least twice before, one you may remember from the blog as the class that wanted to see God do supernatural things in their lives. And after seeing other classes of eighth graders, (and even their own class) the fact that everyone in the class was quiet and attentive this morning could only be the work of the Holy Spirit. Because they were so attentive we were able to cover a lot of material. We shared Daniel Chapter 3 (the firey furnace) and emphasized the points that the three had gone against peer pressure to worship a false God and that God still does miracles like that today, sharing stories about people from our church and friends of ours who have seen God do amazing things to save people from death. And we were also able to share Psalm 30 in that class and have a discussion about the ways God protects us and helps us.

One of the kids in that class was excited because she had also been camping with her family in Narrabeen for the weekend (at the same time we were), and had unmistakably seen Daniel retrieving a nerf football from the road through the campground.

The third period class was a completely different atmosphere. That particular class is a little roudy and talkative today as they had been on the other days we've been with them. They had lots of questions, not all of them biblical. There were a lot of misconceptions about who God is in that class. "Did Jesus really marry Mary Magdelane?" "Are Ghosts real?" "Is Scientology a Christian religion?" "What if you worship demons instead of God?" And so on and so forth. Some of them know who God is too, but they have doubts, aren't sure about what they believe, and what's true and what's fiction they've been told is truth. The thing that really quieted them down though, and drew in their attention and focus was hearing our testimonies. They'd already heard parts of them, as Diana and I (Jessica) had both been to that particular class before, but Diana shared more details she hadn't shared before, and they were really listening to how God had changed Diana's life--the holy spirit had quieted them and drawn them in with facination about God.

And it was also really neat talking to the substitute teacher who was supervising that period (Chris the scripture teacher has been with the 7th grade swim camp for the past few class days) and hearing him share that he was really impressed by the stories from our lives that we'd shared (our testimonies), he said he'd never really read scripture before, so the ideas we shared about who God is was new to him too.

Youth Camp

Friday afternoon we went to Narrabeen, a beach town about 40 minutes away for a camping trip with the Youth Group. Most of our group went down there early to set up the tents and get dinner organized. However, some of the group stayed back to drive the kids out to the coast, and a couple self-sacrificing warriors from the church went back to pick up a load of kids after driving all the way out to the beach at rush hour to drop off their carfuls of camping equipment. It was a warm afternoon too, and a couple of those cars were not equipped with air-conditioning.

The kids arrived around dinner time and had snags for dinner and then a "youth group" style meeting with worship and sharing. Some of the kids from the group shared their testimonies. In the morning, John shared a devo, and everyone came away raving about how much his devo had spoken to them.

Overnight the sky had changed though, and in the morning it was rather rainy and cool. But by the time group quiet time was over and it was time to pack up the tents, the rain turned into a drizzle and then stopped. The afternoon was spent at the beach before a pizza lunch and returning to Castle Hill.

All in all, the most common complaint about the trip was "it wasn't long enough!"

A silent cry out from the Youth

By: Chris Kingston
December 1, 2006

There is a silent, huge problem with today’s youth with the fact that cultural influences such as movies, television, radio, ipods, internet and video games quickly altering the minds of the youth and taking away the positive perspectives of our teenagers around the world.

I am not going to bash the media and the way kids are influenced in today’s society, but what I do what to point out is everyone is becoming so individualist and losing so many great opportunities to interact with other people, humans, friends, and families by always focusing on being entertained. This is a full fledge epidemic!

Jesus Christ was focused on people, serving and healing others, and the inner condition of their hearts. We are here in Australia sharing the good news of the Gospel to the youth.

What our HSE team is discovering is the fact that Australian youth and teens are just like the American teens. They are influenced by the same shows, music, video games etc. They are not receiving the love and time needed from key adult figures and roles models in their lives.

We have been blessed by what God has given us the opportunity to go and do while down-under in the Sydney area. God is giving us a daily chance to go into public schools and interact and share who Jesus Christ is, what he has done in each of our lives, and what HE wants to do in each one of the youth lives, To give them Hope and a Future...

This mission’s trip has been non-stop from the time we landed on November 12th. ome people might think, wow, the team went to Sydney, what a nice vacation. Wrong, our intention has always been to be available and ready to serve God and be used in all the blessings he has waiting for our team. That has turned into many 14+ hour days with constant opportunities to interact and share with the youth here.

Please pray for hundreds or thousands of youth to come to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Please specifically pray for the following schools: Model Farms H.S., Kellyville H.S., Castle Hill H.S., and Pacific Hills. Pray that the bondage of deception, discouragement, and any sin be taken out of their lives.

Also, please pray for our time and relationships with the youth group at Calvary Chapel Church were we are serving. Unlike Model Farms, where there is one scripture teacher and the kids rotate around when they have scripture, at Castle Hill, they have a large group of scripture teachers come in on Thursday mornings and everyone has scripture at nearly the same time. The scripture teachers we met at Castle Hill High School are all young and seemed to primarily come from Hillsong Church.

Here are some pictures of us meeting with the scripture teachers before class in a meeting room in the school library:

Like everywhere else we have done the choices lesson, the kids responded well to it. Many of the kids were a little roudy, which is almost to be expected in classes of 7th and 8th graders, but when we shared our testimonies they were really interested and attentive to what we had to say.

A lot of our message was stuff they'd never heard before. One class genuinely had no idea whether "sexual purity" means you have sex or don't have sex--purity was a completely novel idea to those kids. And we thought they might understand integrity well since it appeared to be one of the school's "core values" that was on their bulletin board, but again, it was a message that if they had heard before it didn't sink in fully.

Jessica's Experience:
My (Jessica) heart was really broken for these kids. The school, as we understand it, has a little bit of a "bad reputation" compared to some of the other schools in the area. These kids desperately needed to hear the message we were sharing. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to go into this school again, and its been on my heart to pray for the scripture teachers at that school, that the word of God would penetrate these kids through their time at the school.

One of the teachers, "Diego" (because he is from San Diego actually) is a little bit of a legend aroudn the school. When I was at Castle Hill Shopping Centre on our day off on Monday I talked to a group of kids who were begging for change for the bus, and after asking whether I went to Hillsong and hearing why I was in Australia they asked whether I knew Diego, because he'd been their scripture teacher at Castle Hill High School. What a coincidence that I'd just met Diego a few days before and could connect to the kids on that level!

Relationships Seminar at Kellyville High School

A huge blessing from the Lord was presented to us last week, when a door opened to present a seminar about relationships at Kellyville High School for two seperate 90 minute sessions for their year 10 and 12 students, approximately 14-17 years old.

When we arrrived at the school and began to set up the room, we got to meet some local youth pastors and leaders who were also helping with the worskhop, and they brought us a lot of encouragement.

We gave a power point presentation on relationships from a biblical standpoint. John, Lia, Daniel, Tanya, and Chris all shared from our own personal experiences as well about bad relationships we have had in the past, intermixing the Gospel of Jesus Christ througout.

At the end of the presentation, we broke apart into small groups with about 8-10 kids of the same gender, and talked about relationships and about Jesus Christ. The kids were very responsive and asked really good questions. God was moving in the kids hearts. God used it to make these kids think and ask questions and to here the truth about relationships and what real love is and that real love only came through Jesus Christ. It was a truly amazing experience, and these kids really enjoyed us coming and sharing about relationships. God really blessed everything and showed these kids his love through this seminar.

Tanya's Experience:
God allowed me to share about purity and impurity and their consequences. The crowd was a little rowdy at first, but as many of us got to share our testimonies, the students gave us full attention. After the teaching we broke up into groups and God allowed me to share about how He has restored my soul regarding what has happened in my past, how God as brought many Christian brothers into my life to show me what Godly men act like, and has given my a pure love for them. Some of there girls had good questions like one girl asked "Do you think God has only one perfect person for me?" I told her about Deuteronomy where God had a selection of people to chose from to be His, but He chose Israel and how God allows us to choose. They asked what I am doing now and I shared with them that I am waiting on the Lord and asking Him to bring me someone special, as the guy is supposed to pursue the girl. I also warned them that a guy has a greater sense of rejection than we do, as we still can say yes or no.

Daniel's Experience:
This relationships seminar was absolutely amazing and effective, I got to share with these kids about the five relationships i had with girls before i accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior and even though I never had sex and was a virgin that the other things like making out and things still hurt and cause pain, and are meant for marriage. I shared that I couldn't find real love from those things but that I did find love through Jesus Christ. The kids were all so responsive and attentive, throughout the whole seminar. In the group I went there was one kid who had no faith in anything, I just encouraged him to seek God out and to ask that he would show himself faith in his life. In the two classes we talked about Jesus and what we were like before Jesus Christ and when were following Jesus Christ. Kids prayed the salvation prayer in my group and it was a blessing to see. God did amazing things through everyone and planted a lot of seeds in these kids. God was doing a work and we were walking in it praise the Lord.

Cafe Outreach

We have done cafe outreaches the last two saturdays in a row. These pictures are from the first one, and give a pretty good picture of what the event was like--bands from the church played clean secular music and there was a good mix of people from the church and non-christian friends, giving us the opportunity to bring them into the church facility in a non-threatening "non-churchy" atmosphere. The following weekend we had a follow-on event with a more christian focus, including worship music, games, pizza, and fellowship.

Evangelism Training Workshop

On Saturday we had an evangelism training workshop for the church. The concept was a two hour workshop focused on approaches and encouragement to share your faith. We wanted to show them that there are a lot of different techniques you can use when you are evangelizing. In doing that it provides them exposure to different techniques that suit varied personalities. Some people will love using the law and ten commandments to show people their need for Christ. Others will feel more comfortable sharing a testimony of how God has personally transformed their life.

We also included a lot of encouragement about why we should evangelize, including two video clips. One was of a thirty second enactment of the rapture coming in the middle of a church service. The other was an audio clip we heard at the school of Evanglism about a little old man who handed out tracts on George Street in Sydney Harbor (can you think of a more relevant place to be using that as an encouragement??) for 40 years without hearing of a single salvation, and then all of a sudden before his death he is met by this baptist pastor from London about all these people who'd come to know the Lord after receiving his tracts.

If you'd like to watch either of those videos here are links:
Rapture Video (view on youtube, downloadable at the potters house)
Man from Sydney Video (one thing to note on that particular video site: if you do not have ad blocking software that blocks the popup ad, click the x button on the popup that appears...do not click "ok" unless you want spyware installed on your computer)

We presented our material using powerpoint, having each of us take turns speaking on different topics. At the beginning there were a couple of glitches due to an out of order slide and conversion from powerpoint to open-office format overlapping some of the text and pictures, but overall it went really smoothly and we were thankful we'd been able to get the powerpoint to show up on the projector at all. The setup to make powerpoint project on the projector instead of the computer monitor is a little complicated, but the right people were able to be found beforehand to help us set it up right. Praise God he listened to all the prayers for this event!

Originally we wanted to have a "go out and practice this" practical ministry experience time immediately following our workshop, however, due to the second cafe outreach being scheduled a few short hours later, the timing just didn't work out. So please pray that another opportunity would arise where we could go out and practice evanglizing with the locals from the church.

After the two hour presentation, we spent another half hour just answering questions from the audience, which was a huge blessing all around. The questions were extremely relevant to what we'd just presented and showed an understanding of the material (it hadn't just floated over their heads), and gave us more opportunity to share about personal experiences we've had evangelizing, and how God has worked through those experiences.

Model Farms Praise Report

Wednesday Novenber 22nd at Model Farms

John and I (Diana) taught out of the book of Ephesians, telling each class about the Gospel with an emphasis on grace and God's purpose for their lives. During one class we were led to share with the class why we trust in Jesus, so John and I both took turns explaining what God has done in our lives since we surrendered to Him. The kids were in awe! I asked them if they have seen God move in their lives like that, and they just sat there. Then John asked them if they have seen God move in another person's life, and once again they just sat there. So I asked them who wanted to see God move in their life, and without haste many of them raised their hands. We led them in prayer to invite Jesus into their lives, and to surrender to His will. While we were praying I couldn't help but look up and see if they had their heads bowed, and all of them did! One boy even had tears in his eyes. I was amazed to see God moving in their hearts the way He did because this is a class we had the day before, and they couldn't stop moving and teasing each other. Even the kid who most vocally and negatively responded to the definition of grace the day before was one of the first to raise his hand expressing he wanted to see God move in his life.

Lia's Perspective

Lia asked me to share with everyone what she's seen God doing in the past week:

This past week I have seen God work in the hearts of the church members. About 16 members came to the Evangelism Training on Saturday from 12-2 pm and members asked pertinent
questions till 2:30 pm. The Holy Spirit's presence was felt, it ministered to us all. We had a sweet time of fellowship afterward. We were blessed with Janet helping to set-up for the Cafe Outreach [scheduled for 7 pm the same day].

The Moran family opened their home to the team to have a spot of lunch and fellowship with them and others that dropped by in between the two events.

I have experienced God's love through my brothers and sisters, God is moving in our hearts to surrender ourselves entirely to Him for His work.

Saturday's Cafe Outreach was very intimate we worshipped God in Spirit and truth. There was a sweet time of prayer lifting up special requests. Afterward we broke bread and fellowshipped through games and conversation.

At Sunday's service God's Spirit was evident in the sharing of God's word. There was healing, hope was renewed, I believe that God's will was expressed through forgiveness. God is at work daily.

God's word says in Psalm 37:4 "Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart." He desires that we would forgive one another. We reflect God's character when we forgive others.

P.S. This is what I saw God doing this week. Several kids stopped by wanting to know where John was today (he was at a different school today), and three 10th grade girls we'd met last week in the hallways (they aren't in any of our classes) came looking for us in the teachers lounge, and spent one of our prep periods talking to us. After school as we were leaving, several kids wanted to know when we'd be back.

Salvation Report

Today at Model Farms, Diana sensed something was up with one particular student in the class that had just finished, was about to tell Daniel he should talk to the student, but when she looked over at Daniel, he was already walking over to the kid. It is about 15 minutes drive from the church so the cars we've been lent have been a huge blessing in getting to and from the school. Chris Haines, the scripture teacher is enjoying having us here and looks as though we may be able to continue to teach in the scripture class every school day for the rest of our trip, so we will all be polished public speakers by the time we get home.

We've been sending teams of two to four people per period, depending on what else is going on during the day and how many periods of scripture class there are. In the schools here, high schools are students from grades 7 to 12. However, some of the older kids are taking exams right now, so we've mostly been in 7th to 9th grade classes. The schedule is on a two-week rotation, with only two periods of scripture during each two week period. Each day there are different amounts of scripture classes, some days its only two, other days there are six. All in all, Chris estimates that he teaches about 600 kids, so this means there is a lot of different kids we will have the opportunity to interact with.

In addition to sharing bible passages, in the past couple days at the school, we've spent class time introducing who we are, answering questions, and sharing testimonies. In some classes we've also had time to do a devotional lesson such as "Who is driving the bus in your life" or one of the interactive message-driven activities we learned from Steve Gonzoles. The class is mostly taught topically, so soon we will be moving into sharing topical lessons to the classes.

The students are very excited to meet us and think our "accents" are really funny, and enjoy asking us to say words like "aluminum" in our american accents. They also are amused how we say trunk instead of boot for the compartment of the car where you stow your luggage. They had a lot of questions about america, ranging from whether we lived in "ghettos" to whether everything they saw on the OC about America is real.

Our team is already starting to build relationships with individual kids. One girl asked Diana after class how she had started her relationship with God. Another girl approached me (Jessica) in the hallway to say that she really appreciated how vulnerable we'd been in sharing about ourselves the day before. These kids are listening to what we have to say, and the more we put ourselves out there where we can interact with them, the more we can build relationships and have opportunities to individually impact their eternities.

Many of the kids taking scripture class are only doing so because their parents thought it would be a good idea, though others already have a relationship with Jesus, and are involved in youth groups at their home churches or the christian club at school.

God has also been opening up other doors into other schools as well, One of those doors is a 90 minute assembly next week, and if they are impressed with that, that could potentially open further doors at that school to speak in classes.

Introducing Our Team Members

Daniel
Daniel is a magnet for kids, they are naturally drawn with curiosity to his curly red hair. And then after seeing how well he relates to them, they are drawn into the message of the gospel. A recent high school graduate, he relates easily to the kids. He grew up in a Christian home, but only recently came to truly understand in his heart who Jesus is, and is now growing a lot in effectively conveying the gospel.

Chris
Chris spearheaded the efforts of making Australia one of the internship destinations, and was later unanimously elected team leader. Having lived in Australia for two and a half years, he really has a heart for the youth here. He has a lot of experience speaking in schools that he gained on our mission trip to Poland last semester, and the rest of the team hopes to glean insight from his experience on the missions field.

Diana
Diana has a heart for discipleship, and is always keeping an open eye for opportunities God presents. She knows how to brew a good cup of coffee, but has talent also in sales and measuring for home remodels--she's very organized and is always well-dressed. She has a heart for prayer and acute sense of the spiritual needs of our teammates and when spiritual evil needs rebuking.

Lia
Lia has a natural knack for shopping and happening to have exactly what you need at the right moment, often times something she picked up thinking "this looks useful" without knowing in advance what it would be useful for. Lia has a true servants heart and overflows with Christ-like love. She misses her husband very much, but has confidence that God always does amazing things when they are seperated for a time. Perhaps God will use her loving relationship with her husband to help her minister to other women about godly marriages. She loves small childen and is looking forward to helping out with the children's ministry at the church.

John
John keeps things real for the team. He loves sports, and will be heading up any sports outreaches we do in Australia. He misses his wife and thirteen year old son, but without whom he probably wouldn't be here. They encouraged him to go and even filled out the visa application for him so he wouldn't have any trouble getting in the country with his Liberian passport. John has a lot of experience from his job coordinating major events, that we hope to draw from for our ministry efforts. He is our barbeque grill master, and doesn't complain about the work no matter how challenging (like cleaning these windows at the church).

Jessica
Jessica is usually cited as the "techie" of the group, she writes the blog and set up the email list for our team. She had been working as a software engineer for two and a half years before starting the School of Evangelism and has been blessed by God to continue there part-time through school. Her heart for ministry is missions--she was involved in the Missions Ministry at the Rock church for a year and a half before going on her first mission trip (to Poland with the School of Evangelism) but has now been to five different countries in the past seven months, and is excited about getting more involved in a leadership role in the ministry in the future.

Tanya
Tanya is full of spunk and personality, and has a definite gift of administration among many other spiritual gifts. She took a big step of faith coming all the way from Massachusetts to come to the School of Evangelism, having bought a one way ticket, not even knowning yet whether her application was accepted. She has a background in biology, and is fascinated with and enjoys all areas of ministry and hoping that this trip will show her what area of ministry to focus on when she gets back. She's already involved in the prayer ministry, but many other ministries interest her as well.

Internet Problems

Apologies for not updating sooner. We've been having trouble with our internet connection at our host home. The internet there works for accessing the internet, but has been refusing to send emails or update the blog (details for the techies: trouble with the post form action).

But to summarize what we tried to post earlier unsuccessfully, we spent the last two days planning what is upcoming and discussing our expectations for the trip and getting an orientation at the church. Today we are breaking up into three teams. Two of the teams will be going into schools to teach lessons, and one team will be blessing a new mom from the church.

We are adjusting quickly to the time-change. Our host families are each perfect matches. Doors are opening to go into schools. Just yesterday a new door opened for us to give a 90 minute assembly at a school, in addition to the two schools (a primary school 2nd and 6th grade, and a high school scripture class) we will be speaking at today. Continue to pray the speaking opportunities God has given us will reach people with the hope in Jesus Christ, and for more doors to open!

As far as transportation, a solution is working itself out, as a couple of the families have spare vehicles they are willing to lend us. Driving is an ideal solution since we are staying in the suburbs where the public transportation is limited, and our destinations scattered. But as you are probably aware, in Australia they drive on the left side of the road, which is a bit of an adjustment for us. So please keep in your prayers that this would come naturally to us, that we'd have wisdom in deciding who should be our drivers, that those who drive would be confident in their ability to navigate the Australian roads safely, and of course that the Lord would send his angels out to protect us and keep us out of harm's way.

Prayer Requests:
* Team Unity
* Open Doors to speaking in Schools
* Divine inspiration of what to speak
* Safe Driving
* Logistics would be worked out supernaturally

Sunday Night Church Service

Team Australia Has Arrived

G'Day Friends, Family and Prayer Warriors,

This is Team Australia checking in for our first update to let you know that we have arrived in Sydney safely. The Lord has blessed us every step of the way here. We didn't have any hassles with customs or lost luggage. Our fourteen and a half hour flight (LAX to Sydney via Qantas Airlines) was smooth and comfortable, we were all able to get a good night's rest. No lost luggage to report, nor any hassles with customs or the TSA. We were all in agreement that this was one of the most pleasant economy class international flights we've had. Praise God for his protection and mercy!

We were a bit concerned that fitting our baggage in the van taking us to LAX (Thank you Michelle!!) or station wagons in Sydney might pose a challenge, but the Lord worked it out perfectly so that everything just fit exactly just right in the space available each step of the journey.

We were greeted at the airport with a warm welcome from Ross, the coordinator from Calvary Chapel, who arranged our lodging (which is quite comfortable beyond what we expected as well!). We were treated to snags (like sausage hotdogs), salads, chips, and watermelon.

We were taken straight to the church without so much as a shower or change of clothes for a meet and greet authentic Australian Barbe. It was wonderful to begin building relationships with our brothers and sisters down-under. We also got to meet Des Daniels, the pastor, and many other wonderful individuals from the church who we will be working with over the next five weeks. We are safe and in good hands!

God Bless everyone back home who helped us prepare to teach and with general preparations for our trip!

Current prayer requests:

Adjusting to the time-difference, that we may be ready to jump into ministry rather than fighting jet-lag.

opportunities for speaking in multiple schools, evangelism, prayer, meeting other christians

transportation (Sydney is a very large spread out city, and we are staying in the suburbs. We'd like to bless others by supporting their needs, but some amount of that is dependent on appropriate transportation being available)

3-2-1 Takeoff

Tomorrow night is our departure, and we are excited and ready to go.

We'd like to thank everyone who was praying for God's provision for transportation up to LAX, as usual God has come through and opened doors for us. One of the girls who has driven the busses to pick us up from practicums and wilderness trips past has kindly volunteered to drive us up to LAX in a Horizon van (or small bus?). We are blessed by the opportunity this will provide as far as unity as we all get to travel up as a whole group rather than split across several cars!

We thank you for your continued prayers for safe travels to Australia and that our luggage would not get lost. The money is due by tomorrow and we are confident God will provide the remainder, just as he has been faithful to provide the amount we needed for plane tickets, and everything else. The plane tickets purchase has been finalized, so we can also add a praise report that we were able to get the the tickets for under the price we'd budgetted, and for last minute tickets, that's nothing short of a miracle. Thank you to all those of you who were praying on our behalf!

We've been quite busy with preparations, we are working on a ministry calendar this week as well as a departure packet with all the emergency contact info. In fruit sharing opportunities, this last weekend we held a carwash in point loma and had a very successful yard sale. The week before (in addition to other things) we had a prayer dinner at Chris's condo complex, and through it many hearts were stirred by what God is doing. As a result of that event, we were blessed with financial support in unexpected amounts in addition to the blessing of the commitment many have made to pray for what God's going to do through us in Australia.

Preparing the Way

We are working hard on making the preparations necessary for our mission trip!

Today we finalized the rough draft of our budget. It will probably change many times yet as ticket prices fluctuate and other expenses are nailed down or eliminated, but it is better to have a plan and adjust it than not to have planned at all!

One of the key principles we've been learning at school about fundraising is that its not really about raising the money (if God can speak daylight into existence, a a thousand or couple thousand dollars per person should be a walk in the park), but more importantly about creating opportunities for other people to share in the blessings in heaven that come from the fruit of the ministry we'll be doing. So in other words, other people will get rewards in heaven for the work we do simply by praying for us, making financial contributions, equipping us to do ministry, or by contributing labor to make the fruit-sharing opportunities possible. So for this reason, we don't call it "fundraising" we call it "fruit-sharing".

This last weekend we teamed up with Team Africa and Team Philippines to organize several fruit-sharing opportunities in different parts of town, primarily car-washes and yard-sales. The majority of Team Australia supported the Point Loma carwashing effort. Walgreens (right at the busy intersection of Rosecrans and Midway) blessed us by donating the use of their water and parking lot for the afternoon, and we brought the hoses and soap and all the labor and signs to advertise. We really appreciated how HSE1 was working hard on gaining some heavenly rewards by contributing extra labor so that we could attract more business and wash more cars in the same amount of time. We had a lot of business including a limo and a short bus. It also gave us a great opportunity to share with people why we're going to Australia!

But this weekend was hardly the last of our fruitsharing opportunities. We are going to be doing more carwashes, but also prayer dinners, silent auctions, swap meets, and other creative ideas as we think of them. We've also been spending a lot of time in prayer, meeting before school every day to pray, as well as taking some of our mission trip preparation time in class for prayer (most of the rest of it has gone to planning and preparations!) rather than trips to Carl's Junior or other unproductive uses of our time. We've been asking for God's oversight over our trip and planning, for God's blessing of those helping to make our ministry possible, financial provision, and that we would stay attuned to what God wants us to do in Australia, among other things.

We've also been working on drafting up our first prayer letter, and have that almost done, and are really excited about it and can't wait to share it with everyone. As soon as we fix a few last typos and adjust the margins, we'll get the stamp of approval from one of the team members to go ahead and begin distribution of them to our friends, families, and home-fellowships.

Team Australia

<IMG SRC='http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6409/81/400/IMG_4391.jpg' border=0 alt='' style='display:block;margin 0px auto 10px;
